Champion Spark Plugs For Briggs and Stratton Engines

A Champion spark plug is an electrical device that fits into the cylinder head of an internal combustion Briggs and Stratton engine. The Champion spark plug will carry two electrodes separated by an air gap, across which the current from the ignition system discharges to form the spark for combustion. There are many different types and sizes of Champion spark plugs, which are designed for a number of different requirements.

Some of the most commonly used Champion spark plugs used on Briggs and Stratton engines are; RJ19LM, which most commonly replace Brigs and Stratton part numbers 802592s and 802595s and J19LM, which most commonly  replaces Briggs and Stratton part number 492167s.  A few more of the most  commonly used Champion spark plugs used in Briggs and Stratton engines are: RC12YC, which most commonly replace Briggs and Stratton part numbers 491055 and 692051; and RC14YC, which most commonly replaces Briggs and Straton part number 496018s.

There are a few different sections that make up an entire Champon plug. From the tip of the plug you have the terminal, which runs all the way thru the Champion spark plug and comes out at the end of the threaded section of the plug. The terminal is covered at the top of the plug by the insulator or the “ceramic” piece. On the lower piece of the Champion plug the terminal is covered by the metal shell, followed by the threading. Inside the Champion spark plug you have the center electrode and on the very end of the plug you have the ground electrode or the “gap”. The ground electrode is the piece that stems from the very end of the threading . The gap or the ground electrode can often be set to far and this can cause the Briggs and Stratton engine to miss fire or not fire at all, this often can be fixed by knowing what the gap should be a by measuring the gap that is in the Champion plug that is on the Briggs and Stratton engine presently. To measure the gap in a Champion spark plug there is a special tool required, which you can now purchase at our online store.

The threaded section of the Champion spark plug and the attaching hole in the cylinder on the Briggs and Stratton engine are manufactured to meet certain established standards. The threaded portion of the Champion spark plug is actually known as the diameter, some of the most commonly used are:

10, 14, 18, mm and 7/8 and ½ inch.

The length of the thread, and the depth of the thread of the cylinder head of the Briggs and Stratton  engine are also uniformed throughout. This is measured from gasket seat of plug to cylinder end of thread. There are four different reach plugs that are more commonly used; these being: 3/8, 7/16, ½, and ¾ inches.

When the Champion spark plug is properly gapped and the system has no short, there should be no more than 7,000 volts required to create a spark. Higher voltage will be required as the Champion spark plus get warmer, or as compression pressures or as distance of air gap is increased. Compression is highest when in full throttle and relatively slow engine speeds. High voltage requirements or a lack of available secondary voltage normally shows up as a miss during maximum acceleration from a slow engine speed.

During the operation of the Briggs and Stratton engine, part of the heat that is generated during combustion will be transferred to the Champion spark plug. Next the transfer will be from the Champion spark plug to the cylinder of the Briggs and Stratton engine. The temperature of the Champion spark plugs will play an important roll in the way the Briggs and Stratton engine will operate. If too much heat is being withheld by the Champion plug then the fuel-air mixture may be ignited by contact with heated surface before ignition spark occurs. If there is not enough heat being withheld, then soot and other partially burned products may build up on the tip of the Champion plug causing the plug to foul or short. When this happens the spark will not bridge the gap and the Briggs and Stratton engine will misfire.

The temperature of a  Champion spark plug can be controlled to a certain extent by changing the  path the heat will have to follow to reach the threads and gaskets of the plug. This indicates that a  Champion spark plug with a short, stubby insulator or “ceramic” will run cooler than a plug with a long narrow insulator. Most popular sized Champion spark plugs are available in a number of different ranges of heat. These may be interchanged within their own groups. The correct heat range is determined by the design and the type of service of the Briggs and Stratton engine. You may to refer to Spark Plug Servicing Fundamentals for additional information on how to make the correct Champion spark plug selection.

Spark Plugs There are many different sizes and types of spark plugs which are designed for a number of specific requirements.  The attaching hole in the cylinder and the threaded, shell portion of the spark plug are manufactured to meet certain industry established  standards.  “Thread size” measures the diameter of the spark plug.  Those most commonly used are  ½  inch, 7/8 inch 18mm, 14mm and 10mm inch pipe.  The" reach” part of a spark plug is referred to when measuring the firing end of the shell to the gasket surface of shell.    Briggs and Stratton offers many different types parts that work with spark plugs and are available here online.  For example, part number BSP-394891, Armature/Magneto, fits L-head twin cylinders commonly used on models 400400 Thru 422700,and model/type 422707-1529, which has a coil with two spark plug  Wires, includes plunger hole plug, ground wire and instructions.  There is a Biggs and Stratton Spark Arrestor, part number BSP-392390, that is available for $27.18.  We have a Briggs and Stratton maintenance kit, which includes filter, pre-cleaner, two spark plugs fuel filter and an oil filter, part number BSP-5119a.   Kohler offers many parts that include spark plug maintenance for many Kholer Engines such as the Kohler engine model 10202-k321.  Kohler offers many items available on our website, such as Kohler part number KOH-1218902s, a spark arrestor, for $18.94.  We also have available, spark plug boots, part number KOH-2413102s,a digital spark adv module, part number KOH-2458427s, available for$113.23, Smartsprk labels, part number KOH-24113108s, available for $1.35, a spark arrestor muffler, part number KOH-4506808s, available for $95.55.  Kohler also offers spark plugs sold individually to fit many Kholer engines, part number KOH-1213202s, spark plug.            Tecumseh engines also have their own brand of spark plugs available here online.
